The XPR-5586GX Intrinsically Safe Dual-Light™ Rechargeable Lantern is a Flashlight, a Floodlight and a Dual-Light that is cULus certified intrinsically safe. The flashlight setting offers 3 user-selectable brightness settings of 650, 380 and 25 lumens with a 388-meter beam distance. The flashlight beam is perfect for lighting up objects at great distances or large areas. The pivoting head allows the user to prop the lantern on its back for easy hands-free use or as a convenient area light. The floodlight setting has the same 3 user-selectable brightness settings of 650, 380 and a “Survival Mode” of 25 lumens that provides just enough light in an emergency situation with nearly a week of constant run-time (150 hrs). The Dual-Light mode (900 lumens) allows the user to simultaneously see objects at a distance, as well as, see the ground in front of them as they walk or work. The 5586 is powered by a single rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
I was recently able to get my hands on the Nightstick XPR-5586GX from a friend and wanted to share my thoughts on this particular light. Now full disclosure, I have been a pretty big fan of the Nightstick flashlights for quite some time. In my past life, I spent a decade working on offshore oil rigs, where I worked from Roustabout to DPSO. Due to the extremely dangerous environments (confined space, explosive gases, pitch-black tank inspections etc.), we were only allowed to use lights rated for Class I Div 1 certification. Typically this meant dim, bulky lights with heavy batteries. When we got our hands on the Nightstick XPP-5422G, it was like finding flashlight gold... that is what initially made me REALLY appreciate the Nightstick product lines. Trusty, durable, dependable, and BRIGHT, everything we needed to work safely on offshore rigs.
When I got the 5586GX, The first thing I noticed was the size. This light is the right size, and the ergonomic design makes it easy to hold and use. The weight of the light is surprisingly light, given its large size. I took it out at night while walking our dog and didn't have any complaints about it feeling too heavy or being awkward after carrying it for 20-30 minutes. It comes with a quick disconnect strap but I didn't need it for such a short route. The best feature of the light is the dual light option. It allows you to see any obstructions at your feet while still having the full 650 lumens pointed in the direction you are working, searching or inspecting. THIS IS THE SINGLE GREATEST FEATURE OF THIS LIGHT. You can safely perform your job without risk of a twisted ankle or tripping and falling on something you can't see on the ground in front of you.
The second best feature was the swivel head that can rotate all the way down to a 90° position and then stand up vertically for hands-free use. A GREAT feature that really sets it apart from other lights in the safety lantern category. This would have made working inside ballast tanks a ton easier and free up a set of hands when needed. I have personally witnessed many twisted or rolled ankles inside tanks from misstepping on beams or slippery liquids that could have been avoided with a downward floodlight.
I also like the fact that this light is rechargeable, you can keep it charged up in the truck and not have to pack spare batteries. Another cool feature is the "follow me" feature. There are two red lights on the rear of the flashlight that give other people the ability to "follow you" in low light situations. There is also a strobe feature on the downward floodlight for added safety.
The beam on this light is insane - It stays crisp and clean as far as I was able to test it, and I was incredibly impressed by the range of this light. This light is seriously bright and would be a fantastic tool for anyone in search and rescue, pipeline work, confined spaces, or any other situation needing a ton of light that is easy to maneuver or illuminate a large area.
I give this light 5 stars and would definitely recommend it to anyone working in a hazardous or explosive environment.
